Synopsis

Cyrano de Bergerac (1990) is a French costume drama you can watch online on iFILM. Director Jean-Paul Rappeneau brought Edmond Rostand's verse play to the screen, and Gérard Depardieu turned the title role into one of the defining performances of his career.

Cyrano can out-fight and out-rhyme any man in Gascony, dropping a sonnet mid-duel while his blade does the rest. Yet in front of his cousin Roxane (Anne Brochet) he loses his nerve. Convinced his enormous nose makes him unlovable, he hands his gift to a rival instead. He ghostwrites burning letters for the handsome but tongue-tied cadet Christian (Vincent Perez), pouring his own passion into another man's mouth. Roxane falls for the words, never guessing whose heart wrote them, and Cyrano guards the secret for years at a brutal cost.

The film took the Best Actor prize at Cannes for Depardieu and won the Academy Award for costume design, with the dialogue carried in rhymed couplets that honor the original. Rappeneau stages battles, sieges and swordplay on a grand scale, but keeps one unspoken feeling at the core. A treat for anyone who loves sweeping romance and language sharpened to a point.
