Synopsis
The Party (La Boum, 1980) is a French coming-of-age romance you can watch online on iFILM. Thirteen-year-old Vic moves to Paris with her parents, starts at a new school, and falls in love for the first time. This is the Claude Pinoteau film that turned Sophie Marceau into a star overnight.
Vic is figuring out who she is: first dances, first kisses, fallouts with friends, a borrowed headset slipped on during a slow song. Meanwhile her parents' marriage wobbles through its own quiet crisis as their daughter sprints toward adulthood. Holding everything together is great-grandmother Poupette, who reads Vic better than either parent manages to.
This was the film half of Europe watched at the start of the 1980s, and the soundtrack ballad Reality became a hit in its own right. The tone stays light without going saccharine, taking teenage heartbreak seriously rather than laughing it off. If you want warm retro nostalgia about growing up, funny and a little sad at once, it fits. Stream The Party (1980) online on iFILM.
