Synopsis
Ivan's Childhood (1962) is Andrei Tarkovsky's war drama, free to watch online on iFILM. It was his first feature, and it announced one of cinema's great directors. A twelve-year-old boy slips behind German lines as a scout.
Ivan has lost everyone. The Nazis shot his mother and little sister in front of him; his father is already dead at the front. Instead of school he crosses marshes at night, carrying intelligence back to the Soviet command. Three officers, played by Valentin Zubkov, Yevgeny Zharikov and Nikolai Grinko, want to ship him to safety. The boy refuses. Nikolai Burlyaev plays Ivan with a burned-out stare no child should have. Between missions, dreams break through: sunlight, a well, his mother laughing.
Adapted from Vladimir Bogomolov's story, the film lays out the visual grammar Tarkovsky would spend a career refining: water, reflections, long takes, silence doing the talking. It took the Golden Lion at Venice in 1962 and introduced Soviet art cinema to the West. Watch it for a war seen not as spectacle but through the eyes of a child stripped of everything.
