Solaris
The planet where nightmares come true…
Synopsis
Solaris (1972) is Andrei Tarkovsky's Soviet science fiction drama you can watch online on iFILM, adapted from the novel by Stanisław Lem. Psychologist Kris Kelvin (Donatas Banionis) arrives at a space station orbiting a mysterious ocean-covered planet. Three scientists are still aboard. None of them will say what has been happening.
The ocean thinks. It reaches into the crew's deepest memories and reconstructs people from them — exact, physical replicas who don't know they aren't real. Kelvin's visitor is Hari (Natalya Bondarchuk), a woman from his past whose death he has never fully made peace with. She appears at his door. She is completely convincing. And she cannot simply be discarded.
Tarkovsky filmed the plot Lem wrote but built something else around it: a slow, three-hour inquiry into guilt, longing and the limits of human knowledge. The film took the Jury Grand Prix at Cannes in 1972 and remains a defining work of European art cinema. Stream Solaris (1972) online on iFILM.
