Synopsis
The Philadelphia Story (1940) is George Cukor's gold-standard screwball romance, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Tracy Lord, a sharp-tongued Main Line heiress, is days away from marrying a dull self-made businessman named George Kittredge.
Then three uninvited guests crash the run-up to the wedding. Tracy's smooth ex-husband Dexter Haven (Cary Grant), whom she once threw out, arrives with a pair of tabloid journalists in tow: wry reporter Mike Connor (James Stewart) and photographer Liz. The closer the ceremony gets, the less Tracy knows about who she actually loves or what kind of woman she really is. One champagne-soaked night by the pool cracks her cool composure wide open.
The picture rescued Katharine Hepburn after Hollywood branded her box-office poison; she bought the rights to the Broadway play and engineered her own comeback on her terms. Stewart took home his only acting Oscar for Connor, and Donald Ogden Stewart's screenplay won as well. The dialogue moves like a rally at center court, and the Grant-Hepburn-Stewart triangle has a spark worth rewatching. If you like your love stories witty and grown-up, this sits near the top of the shelf. Stream The Philadelphia Story (1940) online on iFILM.
