Experimenter

Experimenter (2015) is Michael Almereyda's biographical drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Peter Sarsgaard plays Stanley Milgram, the social psychologist whose obedience studies still unsettle anyone who reads about them.

Yale, the early sixties. A volunteer flips switches at a console, convinced he's shocking a stranger in the next room. The man begs him to stop. Most volunteers keep going anyway, because a calm researcher in a lab coat told them to. As Adolf Eichmann's trial plays out on televisions across the country, Milgram's question about how ordinary people follow orders hits a raw nerve. Winona Ryder is his wife Sasha, who stays loyal while critics brand him a manipulator.

Almereyda refuses the tidy biopic. Sarsgaard talks straight to the lens, the sets stay openly artificial, and at one point an actual elephant strolls down a hallway. The supporting bench is deep: Jim Gaffigan, Dennis Haysbert, Anton Yelchin, John Leguizamo. Best for viewers who want ideas and a playful form over a conventional plot.
