Synopsis

The Boys from Brazil (1978) is a chilling conspiracy thriller you can watch online on iFILM. Aging Nazi hunter Ezra Lieberman gets a frantic phone call from Paraguay: Dr. Josef Mengele is plotting something out in the jungle. At first nobody believes the old man.

Franklin J. Schaffner pits two screen titans against each other. Gregory Peck, cast wildly against type, plays Mengele as charming and utterly cold. Laurence Olivier is the worn-down Lieberman, piecing the puzzle together from one odd fact: across Europe and the Americas, unrelated 65-year-old civil servants are dying on schedule, and each leaves behind a dark-haired boy with the exact same face. The closer he gets, the more monstrous the scheme looks. Adapted from the Ira Levin novel.

The dread here builds through quiet detective work rather than chases, which is what sets it apart from the era's louder thrillers. Both leads were up for awards, and their final face-to-face confrontation is still talked about. Great pick if you like brainy 1970s paranoia with no special effects.
