Synopsis
The Lover (L'Amant, 1992) is Jean-Jacques Annaud's sensual period romance, available to watch online on iFILM. In late-1920s French Indochina, a fifteen-year-old girl from a broke colonial family meets a wealthy older Chinese heir on a ferry crossing the Mekong.
What follows is an affair built on secrecy and inequality more than tenderness. Jane March plays the girl discovering, for the first time, that she can hold power over a grown man; Tony Leung Ka-fai is the lover, bound by his father's will and the rules of class. Their hours in a rented Saigon room give way to a home life of near-poverty, a desperate mother and brothers who turn cruel. Jeanne Moreau narrates as the woman looking back decades later.
Annaud adapted Marguerite Duras's autobiographical, Goncourt-winning novel and filmed colonial Asia with a heat you can almost feel on your skin. The cool retrospective voiceover keeps its distance while the story itself burns. This is for anyone after a slow, aching drama about memory and loss rather than a love story with a happy turn.
