Synopsis

Seven Years in Tibet (1997) is a historical drama you can watch online on iFILM. In 1939 the vain Austrian climber Heinrich Harrer leaves his pregnant wife behind and heads off to conquer a Himalayan summit, hoping the feat will carve his name into the record books.

The climb collapses. Once the great war erupts across Europe, the British lock Harrer in a prison camp in India. After several escape attempts he crosses the high passes on foot with his companion Peter Aufschnatter (David Thewlis) and turns up in Lhasa, a Tibetan city sealed off to outsiders. There the arrogant European is taken under the wing of a teenager his hosts revere as a living god: the fourteen-year-old Dalai Lama.

Jean-Jacques Annaud built the film from the real Harrer's memoir, and across its two-plus hours the egotist slowly learns humility from the boy. Brad Pitt plays the shift quietly, while John Williams wrote the score around Yo-Yo Ma's cello. Stream Seven Years in Tibet (1997) online on iFILM.
