Synopsis
Beirut (2018) is a political thriller available to watch online on iFILM. Brad Anderson directs from a Tony Gilroy script, with Jon Hamm and Rosamund Pike heading the cast. Early-1980s Beirut, once called the Paris of the Middle East, has been carved into hostile blocks by civil war.
Mason Skiles thrived here as a U.S. diplomat until a terror attack killed his wife. A decade later, drinking himself numb in the States, he is pulled back in: a former colleague has been taken hostage, and the kidnappers will only talk through Skiles. CIA officer Sandy Crowell, played by Pike, is assigned to keep him sober and breathing long enough to close the deal. Hamm plays a negotiator who reads everyone in the room better than he reads himself. This is a talky, contained thriller where the tension sits in words and half-truths rather than shootouts — best for viewers who like their suspense slow and verbal.
