A few survivors drift toward a run-down tavern on 7th Street, the last building with a working gas generator. TV reporter Luke, projectionist Paul, physical therapist Rosemary and a young boy named James, who won't leave because he's still waiting for his mother. The rule keeping them alive is brutally simple: stay in the light. Step into a shadow and you're gone. But the batteries are draining, the bulbs are flickering, and the darkness keeps creeping closer.

Director Brad Anderson, who made The Machinist and Session 9, leans on shadow and sound instead of gore, building dread out of the oldest fear there is. Hayden Christensen, Thandie Newton and John Leguizamo lead the small cast. A solid watch for fans of end-of-the-world stories where the dark itself is the monster.
