Synopsis
The Outrun (2024) is a German-British drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Nora Fingscheidt and led by a quietly devastating Saoirse Ronan. Rona is 29, newly out of treatment for alcohol addiction, and heading back to the Orkney Islands — the remote, wind-battered edge of Scotland where she grew up. London chewed through her twenties. She takes work on a local farm, rebuilds slowly, and tries to stop the past from pulling her under. The story doesn't unspool in a straight line: a father whose mental illness shaped everything, a mother's strict faith, the first drink that turned into all the rest. Director Fingscheidt fragments the timeline deliberately — memory doesn't move forward in order, and neither does this film.
Ronan carries it without a single false note. Based on Amy Liptrot's memoir of the same name — Liptrot herself made this journey — the film earns its emotional weight through specificity rather than sentiment.
