About

Synopsis

Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989) is the Woody Allen drama you can watch online on iFILM. It braids two stories that barely seem to belong in the same film. One follows a doctor weighing a murder. The other follows a broke documentary maker falling for the wrong person.

Judah Rosenthal (Martin Landau), a respected ophthalmologist with a spotless reputation, is cornered when his former mistress Dolores (Anjelica Huston) threatens to tell his wife everything. His mob-connected brother offers a permanent fix. Meanwhile filmmaker Cliff (Allen himself) shoots a profile of a smug, self-adoring TV producer, played by Alan Alda, while quietly pining for a colleague (Mia Farrow). Both threads circle the same question: does guilt ever come due when nobody is watching?

This is Allen at his most serious, the jokes set aside for something closer to Dostoevsky than to farce. Landau's haunted performance earned an Oscar nod, and the film still ranks among the director's finest work. It rewards anyone after smart, morally unsettled cinema that refuses easy answers.
