The hunt falls to an unlikely trio. Dr. Laszlo Kreizler is an alienist — the era's word for a doctor of the troubled mind — and Daniel Brühl plays him as cold, obstinate and willing to think like the murderer, something the police simply cannot do. He works with crime reporter John Moore (Luke Evans) and Sara Howard (Dakota Fanning), the first woman employed at police headquarters, who has to fight for every sentence she speaks. Watching over them is a young police commissioner and future president, Theodore Roosevelt.

Adapted from Caleb Carr's novel, the show is built with obsessive detail: gaslit streets, horse-drawn cars, the mud and gilt of the Gilded Age sharing a single frame. It's a slow, heavy meditation on how a monster can look like any man on the street. Fans of mood-soaked historical procedurals in the vein of Hannibal will settle right in.
