About

Synopsis

The Knick (2014) is a historical medical drama you can watch online on iFILM. Steven Soderbergh directed every single episode himself — no hand-offs, no second unit. New York City, the year 1900. Horse-drawn ambulances, chloroform as the primary anesthetic, and surgery where surviving the table was never guaranteed.

Clive Owen plays Dr. John Thackery, chief surgeon at Knickerbocker Hospital — a brilliant, cocaine-dependent pioneer who redesigns procedures the night before performing them. André Holland co-stars as Dr. Algernon Edwards, a skilled Black physician forced to operate in the basement because the hospital won't let him near the main wards. Both men push medicine forward. The institution pushes back.

Soderbergh shot the show like a feature film: cold, near-documentary camerawork paired with an electronic score by Cliff Martinez threaded straight through the surgical sequences. Two seasons, twenty episodes — the kind of series that ends before you're ready for it to. Stream The Knick (2014) online on iFILM.
