Synopsis

Kursk (2018) is Thomas Vinterberg's disaster drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. August 2000, the Barents Sea: a blast tears through a Russian nuclear submarine during naval drills, trapping part of the crew on the seabed as water seeps into a sealed compartment.

The story stays close to sailor Mikhail (Matthias Schoenaerts) and his wife Tanya (Léa Seydoux). Below the surface, the survivors ration what little oxygen is left and hammer signals against the hull. On land, the wives and mothers of the garrison town demand straight answers, while a British naval officer played by Colin Firth fights to get a rescue sub in the water before the clock runs out. Pride and silence cost lives by the hour.

Vinterberg, a co-founder of the Dogme 95 movement, films it plainly, with no manufactured swell of music — which is exactly why it lands. Max von Sydow turns up in one of his final roles, alongside August Diehl and Peter Simonischek. This is a film about bureaucratic stonewalling and quiet dignity more than hardware.
