Serling created the show, hosted it on camera, and wrote the bulk of the scripts himself. A mannequin that turns out to be alive. A small-time crook who lands in paradise and slowly realizes where he actually is. A passenger who spots something on the wing that no one else can see. Wrapped in genre, the series kept poking at racism, nuclear dread, and conformity at a time when network TV would not touch those subjects head-on. Guest casts pulled in Burgess Meredith and Jack Klugman, and a young Richard Donner directed several entries.
