About

Synopsis

Prayers for Bobby (2009) is a drama by Russell Mulcahy you can watch online on iFILM. It draws on the real Griffith family from Walnut Creek, California, where faith mattered more to one mother than who her son actually was.

Mary Griffith (Sigourney Weaver) raises her children in a strict Christian household and loves Bobby most of all. When the young man tells her he's gay, she sees not him but a sin to be prayed away. She buries him in scripture, pushes him toward church, insists God will fix him. Bobby tries to fit the mold, buckles under the weight of it, and the cost falls on the whole family.

The film's real power lands in its back half: a mother who starts questioning the beliefs that cost her a child, far too late. Weaver plays it restrained rather than weepy, and the performance brought her Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. It's for anyone moved by honest stories about acceptance.
