Everybody's Fine

Everybody's Fine (2009) is a quiet family drama you can watch online on iFILM, with Robert De Niro as a recently widowed father. Frank Goode plans a big reunion, then all four of his grown children back out at the last minute.

So Frank ignores his doctor and boards a train, crossing the country to drop in on each child unannounced. A son painting in New York, a daughter (Kate Beckinsale) climbing the ladder in Chicago, a conductor (Sam Rockwell), and the youngest in Las Vegas (Drew Barrymore). One stop at a time, he realizes the tidy lives they described to their mother were softened, edited, half true. She was the one who held the family together, and only now is Frank talking to his kids without her in between.

Director Kirk Jones keeps everything low-key, building a film about how parents see the children they wish they had. De Niro trades the gangster register for a tired old man with a suitcase and a stack of phone cards, one of his gentlest performances. Good for a calm evening when you want feeling over fireworks.
