Synopsis
My Neighbors the Yamadas (1999) is Isao Takahata's animated comedy for Studio Ghibli, and you can watch online on iFILM. There's no magic and no grand plot here. It's just the everyday life of an ordinary Tokyo family, drawn as if a watercolor newspaper strip had quietly come to life.
The Yamadas are dad Takashi, mom Matsuko, grandmother Shige, schoolboy Noboru and little Nonoko. The whole film is built from small things: parents waging trench warfare over the TV remote, a daughter accidentally left behind at the supermarket, grandma dispensing tart advice, dad puffing himself up in front of bullies and then immediately backing down. Each episode is a short vignette with its own ending, sometimes funny, sometimes unexpectedly tender.
Takahata stepped away from the usual lush Ghibli look for a deliberately simple, sketch-like style, and this was the studio's first feature made entirely on computers. Underneath the lightness sits a calm idea: a family holds together through patience, not heroics. Warm, low-key and good for any age. Stream My Neighbors the Yamadas (1999) online on iFILM.
