Synopsis
Only Yesterday (1991) is a Studio Ghibli anime you can watch online on iFILM. Director Isao Takahata follows Taeko, a 27-year-old Tokyo office worker who takes a holiday in the countryside to help harvest safflower.
On the train, her childhood comes back to her. Taeko remembers fifth grade in 1966: a first crush, fights with her sisters, the dread of fraction tests, the taste of a pineapple that once felt like a luxury. Past and present run side by side, and the grown woman seems to consult the girl she used to be. Working the fields, drawn to a young local farmer, she begins to ask whether the life she's living is really her own.
This is a rare anime about adult, ordinary days — no dragons, no spells. Takahata renders the memories in soft watercolor haze and the present in sharper lines, and that very contrast becomes part of the story. No grand gestures, just an honest conversation with oneself.
