Synopsis
Kes (1970) is a British social drama directed by Ken Loach — watch it online on iFILM. Billy Casper is fifteen, from a working-class family in Yorkshire. His older brother bullies him. His mother barely notices he exists. School is worse.
Then a kestrel chick changes everything. Billy steals a book on falconry from the local library and, with no one's help, trains the bird himself. David Bradley plays the role with a raw, unpolished quiet that is genuinely hard to watch. Loach shot the film on location in Barnsley, casting locals rather than professional actors, keeping the Yorkshire dialect intact. The result is closer to a documentary than a feature — grey colliery landscapes, cramped terraced houses, and a system that grinds down anyone who doesn't fit. Released in 1970, Kes remains a landmark of British working-class cinema. Watch it online on iFILM.
