Synopsis
"Stormskerry Maja" (2024) is a Finnish-Swedish historical drama you can watch online on iFILM — director Tiina Lymi's adaptation of Sally Salminen's beloved classic novel, set on the Åland archipelago in the nineteenth century.
Maja, played by Amanda Jansson, and her husband Janne move to the remote island of Stormskerry, where survival is not a metaphor. War reaches even this far edge of the Baltic: Janne flees from English troops, Maja and the children are taken prisoner. Financial ruin follows, and loss piles on loss. Linus Troedsson plays Janne as a man the land slowly wears down — while Maja holds.
The film runs close to three hours and earns the length. Salminen's novel is a touchstone in Finnish and Swedish literature, and Lymi's version keeps faith with it — not glossy, not rushed, and clearer-eyed than most period pieces about what it costs to outlast everything.
