Synopsis
1983 (2018) is a Polish Netflix thriller you can watch online on iFILM. The series poses one question: what if Poland never broke free? A chain of bombings in November 1983 derailed the Solidarity movement, the Soviet Union survived, and twenty years later the country is still running under a repressive police state with its own secret service and rewritten history.
Law student Kajetan Sadowski (Maciej Musiał) and disgraced investigator Anatol Janoch (Robert Więckiewicz) dig into a cold case and find threads connecting directly to the 1983 attacks — and to people still holding power. The show earns its slow pace: the oppressive atmosphere is built detail by detail, from brutalist architecture to surveillance protocols that feel bureaucratically plausible.
Four directors — Agnieszka Holland, Kasia Adamik, Olga Chajdas, and Agnieszka Smoczyńska — brought distinct visual registers to different episodes. One season was produced; the story was left open. Taken as a standalone alternate-history world, it holds. Stream 1983 (2018) online on iFILM.
