Synopsis
Breakup Buddies (心花路放, 2014) is a Chinese road-trip comedy you can watch online on iFILM. Hao Yi's marriage just ended in the messiest possible way. His best friend Yao Jun has one idea: get out of Beijing, drive west, and figure it out later.
Director Ning Hao tells the story across two timelines, cutting between the road trip and the events that wrecked the marriage in the first place. What looks like a comedy about bad decisions through Yunnan province turns out to be a more precise film about how people replay the same mistakes in different settings. Huang Bo and Xu Zheng were among the biggest box-office draws in China at the time; Zhou Dongyu and Shen Teng appear along the way. Funny in the right places, heavier than it suggests.
