Synopsis
Sugarcane (2024) is a documentary you can watch online on iFILM. It traces decades of abuse and the disappearance of Indigenous children at a Catholic residential school in Canada, close to the Sugarcane Reserve in British Columbia.
Reporter Julian Brave NoiseCat and director Emily Kassie follow the paper trail and the survivors' testimony. For NoiseCat the search turns personal — his own father was born at the school. The film never pushes for tears. It sits with people as they say, for the first time, what their community kept quiet for generations.
The result played major festivals and earned an Academy Award shortlist spot for documentary feature. Hard to watch, plainly told, and built on real names and records rather than narration. Stream Sugarcane (2024) online on iFILM.
