Synopsis
Crazy, Not Insane (2020) is an HBO documentary you can watch online on iFILM. Director Alex Gibney — whose Taxi to the Dark Side won the Academy Award for Best Documentary — turns his focus to psychiatrist Dr. Dorothy Otnow Lewis, who has spent her career interviewing violent criminals to understand what actually makes a killer.
Dr. Lewis sat across from Ted Bundy. She interviewed Joel Rifkin. She testified as an expert witness in capital cases and spent years arguing, against the grain of her profession, that severe childhood trauma and dissociative disorders are almost always present in the histories of the most violent offenders. The tagline — murderers are made, not born — is her thesis, and the film walks through the evidence case by case. Laura Dern narrates from decades of archived diaries and case documents.
Gibney keeps the register clinical rather than sensational: this isn't a parade of crime-scene horror but an examination of where psychiatry, law and punishment intersect — and where they consistently fail. Stream Crazy, Not Insane (2020) online on iFILM.
