Synopsis
Secrets of State (Secret Défense, 2008) is a French espionage thriller by Philippe Haïm, available to watch online on iFILM. A quiet war runs through the country every day — intelligence services against terror cells, two opposed ideologies fighting with nearly identical methods.
Alex heads the counter-terror unit of the DGSE, France's answer to the CIA. Al Barad commands an underground network. Both are bound to live in shadow, both manipulate people and spend human lives like ammunition. The film tracks two recruitments side by side: a young operative groomed to infiltrate a cell, and a lost young man slowly molded into a suicide bomber. Gérard Lanvin, Vahina Giocante and Nicolas Duvauchelle play people for whom the end justified the means long ago.
It's a cold, unromantic look at the spy trade — no noble agents here, only the price paid by the pawns. A good fit if you like European thrillers stripped of Hollywood gloss. Stream Secrets of State (2008) online on iFILM.
