Synopsis
A magic sword, a spider cult and a bare-chested hero — Ator, the Fighting Eagle (Ator l'invincibile, 1982) is the kind of Italian sword-and-sorcery romp you can watch online on iFILM, riding the wave that Conan kicked off. Joe D'Amato directs, with Miles O'Keeffe in the title role.
Ator discovers who he really is only after the evil Dakkar's men slaughter his village. He claims the sword of Thoren, the weapon he was destined to wield from birth, and sets out for revenge — while trying to free his sister, who is also his love interest, from Dakkar and his giant-spider worshippers. Along the road wait a witch, a tame bear, a band of warrior women and a creature-feature finale. Sabrina Siani and Laura Gemser round out the cast.
Logic was never the point here; the appeal is the mood of a cheap, sincere 1980s fantasy — papier-mâché sets, guileless effects and a charm that polished blockbusters lost long ago. The film spawned three sequels, growing a small franchise out of this modest Italian start. It plays best for trash-fantasy fans and the so-bad-it's-good crowd.
