Synopsis
Sherlock Hound (名探偵ホームズ, 1984) is a Japanese-Italian animated series you can watch online on iFILM, reimagining Arthur Conan Doyle's cast as dogs in a steampunk Victorian London. The first six episodes were directed by Hayao Miyazaki — the same year he completed Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.
Sherlock Hound and Dr. Watson solve cases while Professor Moriarty and his two hapless accomplices cook up increasingly elaborate contraptions to steal things. The tone is light and the plots are shaped for young viewers. What distinguishes the Miyazaki episodes is the machinery: aircraft, steam-powered gadgets, chase sequences with a tactile weight that feels nothing like standard children's animation. The remaining episodes, handled by other directors, maintain the quality — the baton was passed clean.
