Synopsis
Hiroshima (2005) is an 89-minute documentary drama available to watch online on iFILM, directed by Paul Wilmshurst and produced across Germany, France, the UK and the US. The film covers three pivotal weeks in 1945 — from the Trinity test in the New Mexico desert to the moment a B-29 called the Enola Gay reached its target over a Japanese city.
At 8:15 a.m. on 6 August, a bomb detonated roughly 600 metres above the city. By the close of that year, an estimated 140,000 people were dead. Archival footage, dramatisations and CGI are woven together to examine both the cockpit decisions aboard the Enola Gay and the streets below it. John Hurt narrates; the real pilot Paul Tibbets appears as himself. What sets this apart from standard wartime documentaries is its refusal to flatten either side into abstraction — the political calculus in Washington sits next to the human scale of the blast.
