About

Synopsis

John Adams (2008) is HBO's seven-part miniseries you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Tom Hooper and built on David McCullough's Pulitzer Prize-winning biography of America's second president. It opens at the Boston Massacre trial of 1770 — where Adams, already a convinced patriot, defends the British soldiers — and closes on July 4, 1826, the day he and Thomas Jefferson both died.

Paul Giamatti plays Adams without the bronze-statue treatment: stubborn, thin-skinned, often his own worst enemy, and constitutionally incapable of pretending to like someone he doesn't respect. Laura Linney matches him fully as Abigail Adams; their letters across the Atlantic, written during the years he spent in European diplomatic posts, carry more emotional weight than any battlefield scene. Tom Wilkinson's Benjamin Franklin gets comparatively little screen time but makes every minute count, and Stephen Dillane's Jefferson is cooler and more calculating than you might expect.

Hooper shot almost entirely by candlelight and natural sources — a deliberate choice that strips away the usual pomp and makes the founding era feel genuinely lived-in rather than staged. The series picked up thirteen Emmy Awards and four Golden Globes, a record for a miniseries at the time. If you want American history without the mythology, this is the one.
