Synopsis
Patrick Melrose (2018) — watch online on iFILM, the five-part Showtime mini-series directed by Edward Berger and starring Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role. Based on Edward St. Aubyn's semi-autobiographical novels, it follows a British aristocrat whose polished exterior covers something closer to wreckage.
Patrick grew up in a family where money insulated everyone from the obligation to be decent. His father, played by Hugo Weaving, used cruelty as a hobby. His mother, played by Jennifer Jason Leigh, looked away and called it grace. By adulthood Patrick has mastered two things: blending into London's upper class and destroying himself with drugs and alcohol. Cumberbatch moves between sharp wit and complete collapse, sometimes within the same scene.
