Pieces of a Woman

Pieces of a Woman (2020) is a grief drama you can watch online on iFILM. Martha plans a home birth that ends in tragedy, and the rest of the film follows what it takes to keep living after the worst has already happened.

It opens with a near half-hour birth sequence shot in one unbroken take — the performance that won Vanessa Kirby the Volpi Cup at Venice. In the aftermath Martha withdraws, drifting from her husband Sean (Shia LaBeouf) and from her domineering mother (Ellen Burstyn), who pushes her to sue the midwife. Each person carries grief differently, and it pulls the family apart room by room. A courtroom case runs alongside, forcing Martha to decide what justice would even mean to her.

Hungarian director Kornel Mundruczo made it from a script by Kata Weber, drawn from their own loss. It is slow, painfully honest filmmaking that rests on Kirby's face in close-up.
