Synopsis
The Canterville Ghost (1996) — watch online on iFILM — is a TV film adaptation of Oscar Wilde's 1887 short story, directed by Sydney Macartney. Patrick Stewart plays Sir Simon de Canterville, a ghost three centuries into his haunting duties; Neve Campbell plays Ginny, the American teenager who doesn't run.
The Otis family buys the ancient English manor without much concern for its reputation. Father approaches the hauntings as a science problem. Mother sees a selling point. The twins treat Sir Simon like a target. None of the usual ghost-business works on any of them. Ginny is the exception — she meets Sir Simon where the others don't, and what starts as an encounter becomes something closer to rescue.
Stewart's performance is the reason to watch: dry, a little ridiculous, and quietly sad. Wilde's story was gentle and slightly melancholy; Macartney's adaptation keeps both registers intact. Stream The Canterville Ghost (1996) on iFILM.
