About

Synopsis

In the Fade (Aus dem Nichts, 2017) is a Fatih Akin drama you can watch online on iFILM. Diane Kruger plays a woman whose husband and six-year-old son are torn away in a single morning by a homemade nail bomb.

The setting is Hamburg, a street of Turkish shops. Katja leaves her boy at her husband's office for a couple of hours and never sees either of them alive again. Investigators first dig into drugs and debt, even though far-right extremists planted the blast. Akin splits the film into three movements — grief, trial, reckoning — and shoots the courtroom with almost documentary coldness, against which Katja's helplessness cuts deeper. Denis Moschitto appears as her lawyer, Johannes Krisch as the prosecutor.

The script draws on a real string of murders committed by a neo-Nazi cell in Germany, yet Akin refuses to turn it into a lecture; the camera stays locked on Kruger's face. Her performance took the Best Actress prize at Cannes, and the film went on to win Germany a Golden Globe. This is heavy, catharsis-free cinema for anyone ready to sit with terror and walk away without comforting answers. Stream In the Fade (2017) online on iFILM.
