Synopsis
Witching & Bitching (Las brujas de Zugarramurdi, 2013) is a Spanish horror-comedy you can watch online on iFILM. Three hapless robbers bolt from a pawnshop heist, hijack a taxi with a stranger's kid in the back seat, and drive straight into a village run by witches.
The crew wanted a hideout and crashed a coven instead. In Zugarramurdi a clan of women rules the place, and they need a fresh sacrifice for an old ritual, with men strictly on the menu. To get out alive, the men have to keep from falling for the local beauties and survive a night that gets crazier by the hour. Carlos Areces and Hugo Silva play the bumbling crooks, while Carmen Maura and Terele Pávez are witches who chill the blood even amid all the mayhem.
Director Álex de la Iglesia cranks the whole thing into a screaming circus: black comedy, gory effects, and gender warfare twisted into grotesque farce. It riffs on the real 17th-century witch trials of Zugarramurdi, when the Inquisition sent some villagers to the stake. The film picked up eight Goya Awards.
