Synopsis
El Angel (El Ángel, 2018) is an Argentine crime drama you can watch online on iFILM. It draws on the life of Carlos Robledo Puch, the most notorious criminal the country has ever produced, nicknamed for the blond curls and choirboy face that hid what he actually did.
Buenos Aires, the early 1970s. Seventeen-year-old Carlitos steals the way other kids breathe, dancing through strangers' apartments, pocketing whatever catches his eye, grinning the whole time. At a new school he latches onto Ramón, and the friendship slides fast into a run of burglaries and killings carried out without a flicker of remorse. First-timer Lorenzo Ferro makes that amoral charm impossible to look away from, with Chino Darín, Cecilia Roth and Daniel Fanego filling out the world around him.
Director Luis Ortega skips the usual true-crime grimness and shoots something closer to a pop ballad about a pretty boy who finds blood and shop windows equally shiny. The film was Argentina's submission to the Oscars and premiered at Cannes in Un Certain Regard. Worth it for one face where charm and emptiness sit side by side.
