Synopsis
Taste of Cherry (طعم گيلاس, 1997) is Abbas Kiarostami's Iranian drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Mr. Badii drives his Range Rover slowly through the dusty hills outside Tehran, looking for a stranger willing to do one terrible favor.
Badii has decided to end his life. He has already dug a grave on a hillside, and now he needs someone to come at dawn and bury him for a sum of money. The car turns into a confessional. A nervous young soldier bolts, a religious student argues against the plan on grounds of faith, and finally an elderly taxidermist agrees, but only after telling his own story about a mulberry tree and the taste of the fruit at sunrise. Almost the entire film unfolds as conversations through a windshield.
The picture shared the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 1997 and remains one of the most debated works of Iranian cinema. Kiarostami's closing minutes deliberately break the frame, ending on a question rather than an answer.
