About

Synopsis

Purple Noon (Plein soleil, 1960) is René Clément's sun-drenched crime thriller, free to watch online on iFILM. A poor young American named Tom Ripley is hired to drag a rich man's son back home — and decides he likes the man's life better than his own.

Alain Delon was twenty-five when he played Tom, and that beautiful blank face does most of the work. Philippe Greenleaf (Maurice Ronet) keeps Tom around as a plaything, mocking him in front of his fiancée Marge (Marie Laforêt). On a yacht off the Italian coast, resentment hardens into a plan: forge the signature, mimic the voice, step into the dead man's clothes. What follows is a cool game of cat and mouse with the police, where a single overlooked detail could hang him.

Adapted from Patricia Highsmith's novel The Talented Mr. Ripley four decades before the Matt Damon version, this take is leaner and colder, and plenty of viewers still prefer it. Henri Decaë shoots the Mediterranean so brightly that murder looks like a holiday. For anyone who likes slow-burn suspense and a charming sociopath staring down the lens, it lands hard.
