I'm So Excited!

I'm So Excited! (Los amantes pasajeros, 2013) is Pedro Almodóvar's comedy, and you can watch online on iFILM. A flight from Madrid to Mexico City circles helplessly over Spain with broken landing gear and nowhere safe to set down. A rough landing waits below — and until then, there's time for confessions.

To keep the cabin from panicking, three flamboyant business-class stewards ply everyone with tequila-and-mescaline cocktails and break into a lip-synced routine set to the Pointer Sisters track that gives the film its name. Economy has simply been drugged to sleep. The ones still awake — a producer, a TV psychic, newlyweds, a hitman, a banker on the run — start spilling everything: affairs, secrets, terrors. With death this close, nobody bothers pretending.

After a run of darker dramas, Almodóvar swung back to the campy farce of his early years — frothy, garish, knowingly tasteless. Antonio Banderas and Penélope Cruz turn up only in a brief prologue; Javier Cámara and Carlos Areces carry the rest. It's a love-it-or-leave-it ride: too much for some, just right for others.
