Synopsis
Julieta (2016) is a Pedro Almodovar drama you can watch online on iFILM. A middle-aged Julieta is about to leave Madrid with the man she loves when a chance encounter on the street undoes everything: someone mentions her daughter Antia, who vanished from her life years ago and never explained why.
Instead of leaving, she stays and begins writing the girl a long letter. From there the film unspools three decades — from a hopeful 1985 to a hollowed-out present. Adriana Ugarte plays the young Julieta and Emma Suarez the older one, and the handoff between them happens in a single, nearly invisible camera move. Along the way come a passionate affair on an overnight train, Antia's birth, a sudden death, and the guilt that quietly eats away at the bond between mother and daughter.
The screenplay weaves together three Alice Munro short stories, lifted out of rural Canada and dropped into the Spanish heat. This is restrained, almost hushed Almodovar — less of his usual color, more grief tucked beneath a calm surface. The film was Spain's submission in the foreign-language Oscar race. It's for viewers who love female-led dramas about memory and the things left unsaid. Stream Julieta (2016) online on iFILM.
