Synopsis

BlackBerry (2023) is Matt Johnson's drama about the smartphone that ruled and then vanished, and you can watch online on iFILM. It tracks the real Canadian outfit Research In Motion, whose clunky little device ended up in the pocket of nearly every office worker in the 2000s.

Two opposites drag the company forward. Mike Lazaridis (Jay Baruchel) is the soft-spoken engineer obsessed with getting the hardware right; Jim Balsillie (Glenn Howerton) is the loud, table-pounding dealmaker who'll bully his way through any negotiation. For a while their keyboard phone owns the market outright. Then a guy from Cupertino walks out with a touchscreen, and the men who thought they'd won are too slow to notice the floor giving way.

Johnson shoots it almost like a mockumentary — handheld camera, boardroom shouting matches, jittery cuts that feel closer to office tragicomedy than glossy biopic. Howerton is both terrifying and hilarious. If you like stories about huge ambition and spectacular self-inflicted failure, told without flattery, this is your kind of movie.
