Synopsis
But I'm a Cheerleader (2000) is Jamie Babbit's satirical comedy you can watch online on iFILM. Megan looks like the perfect teen: a cheerleader dating the team captain. Trouble is, kissing him does nothing for her.
Her parents read the signs their own way, vegetarianism, posters of women, lukewarm kisses, and ship her off to True Directions, a camp that promises to turn gay kids straight. Natasha Lyonne plays Megan as a girl who, at first, genuinely buys that she needs fixing. Then she meets Graham, a sharp-tongued fellow camper played by Clea DuVall, and her real feelings start fighting the curriculum. RuPaul as a reformed counselor and Cathy Moriarty running the place push the absurdity to the brink.
The whole film is drenched in candy pink and baby blue, a deliberate visual jab at the gender clichés it's mocking. It's brash but warm, and it grew into a genuine queer cult favorite of the early 2000s. Worth it if you like a heavy subject handled with wit instead of a lecture.
