Kajillionaire

Kajillionaire (2020) is Miranda July's offbeat crime comedy-drama, available to watch online on iFILM. Old Dolio is twenty-six, and for her entire life her grifter parents have raised her less as a daughter than as the third hand on their small-time scams and petty thefts.

The family scrapes by, dodging their landlord in a vacant office and skimming strangers' mail. Old Dolio, played by Evan Rachel Wood, slouches, speaks in a low monotone, and can't recall ever being hugged. The balance tips when her parents, Richard Jenkins and Debra Winger, cook up a fresh con and pull a chance acquaintance named Melanie, played by Gina Rodriguez, into the crew. Melanie treats the girl with a warmth so foreign that Old Dolio starts to grasp what she's been denied.

July directs something strange, tender, and a little awkward, where the heist plot is really an excuse to talk about the affection a person never got. Don't come for a slick robbery.
