Synopsis
The Quiet Man (1952) is a romantic drama with a comic streak, and you can watch it online on iFILM. John Ford directs; John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara lead. American boxer Sean Thornton walks away from the ring and sails back to the Irish village where he was born.
Sean buys his family's old cottage and wants nothing but peace. Then he falls for fiery, red-haired Mary Kate Danaher. Her brother, the loudest brawler in the county, refuses to bless the match or hand over her dowry. Sean learns that village custom here is tougher than any opponent: courtship, the bride-price, a man's pride that money can't settle. And the reason he quit fighting follows him home — one punch once killed a man.
Ford shot the film in County Mayo, the land of his own ancestors, and the work earned him the Best Director Oscar; a second statuette went to the cinematographers for those drenched green hills. The lush landscape, O'Hara's temper and a final fistfight that turns into a town-wide festival make this one of Ford's warmest pictures — and a rare chance to see Wayne play stubborn and tender at once.
