Synopsis
The Grapes of Wrath (1940) is John Ford's Dust Bowl drama with Henry Fonda, and you can watch online on iFILM. Tom Joad comes home from prison only to find the bank has thrown his family off their Oklahoma farm, the soil ruined by years of dust storms.
The Joads pile everything onto a battered truck and roll west down Route 66, lured by handbills that promise picking work in California to thousands of families pushed off their land. The road takes them apart piece by piece — the old folks die, the hope thins out, and when they finally arrive there are ten workers for every job and pennies for a day's labor. Tom, the fierce matriarch Ma Joad, and ex-preacher Casy hold the line as the system squeezes them dry.
Ford adapted John Steinbeck's novel almost the moment it landed, barely a year after the book detonated across America. Gregg Toland's near-documentary lighting gives the migrant camps their raw glow, and the film handed Ford the directing Oscar plus a statue for Jane Darwell as Ma. It remains one of the essential American pictures about the Great Depression — bruising, plainspoken, and unexpectedly tender toward ordinary people.
