Synopsis

C'mon C'mon (2021) is Mike Mills' black-and-white drama you can watch online on iFILM. Joaquin Phoenix plays Johnny, a radio journalist traveling the country to record kids talking about what they imagine the future holds. Then his nine-year-old nephew lands in his care.

Johnny's sister Viv asks him to look after her son Jesse while she deals with her unstable husband. What starts as a few days stretches into a trip from Los Angeles to New York and on to New Orleans. Jesse pelts his uncle with impossible questions, vanishes in a grocery store, throws fits, and slowly teaches the man how to listen. Gaby Hoffmann gives Viv a worn-out tenderness as she's pulled between her boy and her partner.

Mills shot the film in soft monochrome and stitched in real interviews with children across America, so the documentary voices bleed into the fiction. This is quiet, plotless filmmaking where the awkward pauses do the heavy lifting. Phoenix, stripped of the theatrics of Joker, is the gentle surprise at its center.
