Synopsis
Lost Girls (2020) is a crime drama you can watch online on iFILM. Mari Gilbert is expecting her eldest daughter Shannan for dinner, but the girl never shows up, leaving only a frantic phone call begging for help somewhere out on the Long Island shore.
The police drag their feet. Shannan did sex work, and Mari has a reputation as a less-than-perfect mother, so the case gets shelved before it really opens. So she goes looking herself. Her refusal to drop it pushes the investigation toward a grim discovery: along a road near the gated enclave of Gilgo Beach, the bodies of young women had been turning up for years, with no one connecting the dots. Amy Ryan plays Mari as a woman with nothing left to lose, alongside Thomasin McKenzie and a weary Gabriel Byrne as the lead detective.
It draws on the still-unsolved Long Island serial killings and Robert Kolker's book of the same name. Liz Garbus, better known for documentaries, directs, and it shows: this isn't a hunt for a killer so much as a portrait of women the system wrote off as disposable. Quiet, angry, no easy catharsis.
