Synopsis
The Son's Room (La stanza del figlio, 2001) is Nanni Moretti's quiet grief drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. A settled Italian family loses its teenage son in a scuba diving accident, and everything they took for granted comes apart.
Giovanni is a psychoanalyst. All day he absorbs other people's anxieties, then goes home to his wife Paola, daughter Irene and son Andrea. When the boy drowns, Giovanni can't stop replaying that morning, when he canceled a run with Andrea to take a patient's call. Moretti directs and plays the father himself; Laura Morante and Jasmine Trinca carry the mother and sister through grief without a single forced beat.
The film took the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 2001. There are no big breakdown scenes or swelling strings here. Moretti films mourning as small domestic gestures and an unsent letter from a stranger, the slow work of breathing again. It rewards viewers who prefer restraint over spectacle.
